Nuno Gomes Close To New Benfica Deal

Sports daily A BOLA suggests that Benfica are interested in offering striker Nuno Gomes a contract extension...

The Portuguese international has just over a year to run on his current deal.

His club are keen to sort out the player's future and watch him retire at Estádio da Luz in 2010, when he will be a 34-year-old.

Despite his subpar performances this season, Benfica seem to believe that the former Fiorentina talent will prove a stronger figure next year if he is not hampered by injuries.

Moreover, Gomes' importance in the Benfica dressing room is well-known, and the club are reportedly interested in rewarding him with a place on the board once he decides to hang up his boots.

Benfica's plans of having Gomes stay at Benfica may only be wrecked if an interesting offer for the striker arrives at the end of the season, which could make him embrace a new challenge.

It is known that Besiktas made an offer in January for the proud wearer of the shirt number 21, which was promptly refused by both the club and Nuno Gomes.
